Introduction

I’m not an avid romance reader… In fact, I dislike that all books have strong romance storylines. So, I read a few per year, and they must be different from the get-go. When I was offered by BookTasters to review A Dash of Romance by Paullett Golden, the charming cover caught my attention as well as the clever, sweet title. I read the blurb and… A regency-era romance with a lie surrounding their marriage, a big misunderstanding, and a young woman strong enough to write in those times?

Sign me up! I mean, yes, please, let me read this!

Let me tell you it didn’t simply meet my high expectations of a romance book… it exceeded them!

So, here’s my review and why you should totally give this book a read!

Blurb

With quills and fantasies, they write their future.

Percival Randall lives an uncomplicated life of luxury, as he likes it. Not even an ultimatum requiring marriage can tip the scales. A conniving young lady who compromises his name to force a betrothal, however, is an impediment to happiness Percival must confront.

Abigail Walsley dreams of publishing novels rather than marrying dashing heroes. An unexpected proposal and a subsequent Banbury tale tumble her into a betrothal with a man she has never met. Following her dreams proves a challenge with a marriage of inconvenience on the horizon.

This is the love story of Percival and Abigail, two dreamers who write their love story one scene at a time.

From second chance romances to mistaken identities, experience A Dash of Romance in this collection of one short novel and fourteen bonus flash fiction pieces.

The Positive Sides

First, let’s talk about the unusual format of this book. It’s an anthology featuring a short novel with a collection of flash fictions. I found it rather interesting! I enjoyed that there was a novel and that there were several flash fictions accompanied by drawings. It felt like a big treasure followed by smaller but amusing discoveries in the same world. Quite uncommon but highly enjoyable.

As for the writing, the choice of words is precise, and immersive in that era and each situation. Plus, several sentences were fun and well-written. I particularly loved this one, which, I think, is very reflective of an author with her characters and of a romance as well: “The good knight needed her as much as she needed him.” I’d say Miss Golden hit two birds with one stone here.

Moreover, the characters are charming, lovable, hilarious, strong, clever, and multidimensional. I loved them dearly and even believed in them as though they’re real, which I bet in the author’s heart and mind is true as well as mine now that I’ve read this great book. Also, I love that Abigail, the main character, is a writer herself. And she is part of a ladies’ literary society where the ladies talk about real writing issues and weaknesses, such as characters being one dimensional. It was wonderful to see our reality as writers and authors reflected in this book and I laughed. Speaking of Abigail, I love her strong and flawed personality with good values and feminism for her time. She’s also got a lot of courage as well as a head on her shoulders. Her father, the vicar, is charming and loving. As for Percival, her dandy knight, he’s hard to resist, funny, gentleman, but he’s got his own flaws which make him even more rounded as a character and intriguing… It’s like you’re discovering a new layer of him with each chapter.

Lastly, I curled up in bed with my Kobo every night and often told myself I’d read this book for fifteen minutes only because I was too tired… and each and every time I found it was an hour later!!! This is a huge compliment because usually I barely read for fifteen minutes when I’m that tired (and I have been exhausted these last weeks due to university and personal events) but this book had me hooked, laughing, smiling, and enjoying the moment. As pure and simple as this may be.

The Negative Sides

Alas, there is one negative point. I noticed that when Percival meets Abigail, he finds her drab… But in the next chapter when he talks to her, she’s suddenly interesting and charming. But then, this goes back to a reasonable balance in the following chapters… It was confusing and offsetting on the moment. However, it was not essential enough to take away a star or even a half star.

In Conclusion

As I mentioned, the single negative point isn’t worth taking a star off this delightful book, which leads me to giving it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars for all its amazing positive sides! It made me smile, laugh, stay up late to get to the next chapter! But most importantly, it made me stop aching for a while, made me forgot I cried a lot at night just while reading it, and it gave me friends I couldn’t wait to get back to as well as their misfortunes… or were they fortunes in the end? 😉

Complete the Story: My Review and Free Flash Fiction

Hi, folks!

Remember the book Complete the Story I told you in this article of mine I'd come back to?

Well, here it is!

This book gives you the first sentence of a story that you have to complete. I even added the limit of only on one page since there's a new sentence on every page. So, here's to the added challenge! *raises her glass of iced coffee*

As I thought, I simply love this book! Not only is it fun, but it is surprising. The sentences are so varied that you can write a sci-fi story, then fall into romance, historical, and so on. You never know what to expect!

Did I expect the first sentence to turn into a sci-fi flash fiction? Heck no, I barely write in that genre!

Was it fun? YES! Did it make me expand my writing skills and field? YES. Do I regret it? NOT AT ALL.

Here's what I have (you can read it as part of this article further down):

Shine a Light, I Might Accept

It was that fleeting hour of day when the moon and sun are high and bright at the same time. Like many things in my life, these summer nights wouldn’t last much longer. I sat quietly on a fallen tree, staring at the reflections of the sun and the moon on the sparkling purple lake’s surface. A smile expanded on my face as their rays both warmed parts of me while cooling others. I took a deep, satisfying breath with my eyes closed, the chirping of the Lagún birds reaching my ears through the transparent Nhelmet on my head.

Beep ding!

I sucked in my interrupted breath, a bitter disappointment in my chest. Cursing, I pressed on the side of the Nhelmet, just above my right ear.

“Yeah?”

“Kitley, get back inside! School’s tomorrow.”

The shrill voice of my mother echoed in my head. I blinked, defiance boiling in me.

“Come on, they’re out for a few more nights only!”

“That’s very well, but you’ll still come in, Kitley.”

“But dad—”

“Inside.”

The beep sounded and I grumbled. With one last glance at the wonderful moon and sun, I started towards the house. My heart shattered a bit more as I walked to join my breaking family. Maybe it would be better if it ended now.

A Flash Fiction in Spanish: Espejismo

Hello, folks!

As I'm perfecting my Spanish, I took a course in writing what is called "microrrelatos", a.k.a flash fiction. I enjoyed it greatly and figured out you might like reading my first story in Spanish—the first ever!

So, here goes (I'm sorry for those who can't read it, but I really wanted to share it in the hopes of a few enjoying it), y para todos mis amigos y todas mis amigas:

Espejismo

New Weekly Read (Late, Sorry!)

Hello everyone,

I’m late again for the Weekly Reads. Sorry – I had quite a busy week. But here is a mysterious and sad flash fiction by Raphael Casthavian. And here.

I hope you’ll enjoy! 🙂

On a side note, I have already written this Sunday’s Weekly Read so it’s ready to be posted… on time. 😉

I also have good news. I managed to find a solution to my big problem with writing Down to Earth (remember?)! So now I am continuing it. 🙂 I am halfway through a new chapter. Neat, isn’t it?

I’ll keep you updated.

See you on Sunday!

Rebirth & Plot Holes

Hello, folks!

I forgot to post my Weekly Reads last Sunday. Sorry about that. But don't worry!

Here it is. And here as well. It's a horror flash fiction this time – my very first try at horror. Enjoy!

Speaking of fiction, I am working very hard on my novel ''Down to Earth''. However, I hit a major plot hole that could change several things about the story… So I am trying to find what bits and pieces to go with and which to toss away.

Moreover, I will soon come back with other writing tips. Stay connected! That's it for the day!

Have a very nice day/evening/night.

Weekly Fun

Did I mention it’s free?

Whoa, there.

Let’s start at the beginning.

Me and my friend Raphael Casthavian have created what we call ‘Weekly Reads’ on our Websites. Every Sunday, starting today, we will post either a new poem or a flash fiction for you to enjoy for free.

Now, isn’t it fantastic?

I know, I know.

Here is my Weekly Reads page.

And here’s Raphael Casthavian’s page.

Note that we both post the same content on each page, just to be fair. 🙂

Also, go and sign up for my newsletter!

Thus, you’ll be the first to know of my projects’ progress (I send newsletters rarely – only on days where there’s major news, that’s all).

I hope you’ll have a good time reading this week’s Weekly Reads!

One More Step (Flash Fiction)

One more step…

Dalia bit her lower lip in an attempt to stop it from quivering too much. Tears were rolling down her face as she stared into the vast emptiness before her. Locks of her brown hair were gently brushing her face. The teenager gulped and passed her tongue over her teeth, her mind reeling with all the countless possibilities and consequences of her act. Would she do it? Could she, really? She couldn’t see anything apart the big black void and, somehow, it seemed to try and attract her into its very center.

‘’I can’t!’’ she screamed.

Dalia turned round, her hands covering her face as she cried. She could hear the sound of metal screeching and it terrified her. This emptiness… Was she that desperate? Then, she heard the voice of the only person there with her.

‘’Go on. Jump!’’

She wished he hadn’t talked. Oh, why did people feel the need to talk in such dire moments?

‘’But I’m scared!’’

‘’Everyone is scared at this point,’’ he said, his tone of voice more serious.

Dalia clenched her fists and turned round again, only to face the darkness. Her breathing was shallow and quick and her eyes just wouldn’t leave the void. Where had it gone wrong?

‘’Go on!’’

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.  She had to regain her composure before the final act. As calmly as she could, Dalia looked up and jumped at the right time.

‘’Gotcha!’’

Dalia beamed up as her hands firmly caught his. Her body was swinging rapidly above the net as her best friend was keeping his legs tightly wrapped around the trapeze. She had made it!

‘’I told you I would catch you,’’ Antoine said. ‘’I’ll always catch you.’’
